ChevronTexaco To Begin Drilling For Gas, Oil Off Cambodia (2004-Sep-29)
         PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) -- U.S. giant ChevronTexaco (NYSE:CVX) (CVX) will soon start looking for oil in Cambodian waters by drilling five exploration wells, the head of Cambodia's petroleum authority said. The company will likely start work in October on the wells, about 140 kilometers off the port city of Sihanoukville, said Te Duong Tara, director general of the Cambodian National Petroleum Authority. Exploration results are expected early next year. The drilling comes two years after the government and ChevronTexaco (NYSE:CVX) signed a deal allowing exploration of 6,278 square kilometers in Cambodia's portion of the Thai Gulf. The company has since done some preliminary work to find the right places to drill. Cambodia is expecting "some good news" from the exploration, Te Duong Tara said late Tuesday. "The good news is that we can prove how much gas that we have (in the area)...how much reserve we have in oil," he said. Cambodia, which relies heavily on fuel imports and has expensive electricity, could greatly benefit from having its own supplies, Te Duong Tara said. The area will be developed for production if deemed commercially viable, he said.
         ChevronTexaco (NYSE:CVX) officials in Bangkok, where the company's regional office is based, were not immediately available for comment. It will be the first time that there has been so much drilling in Cambodian waters since the late 1990s. Te Duong Tara said the new effort was made possible by cheaper equipment, improved technology and ChevronTexaco's (NYSE:CVX) experience in the Thai section of the gulf. A preliminary estimate for the surveyed Cambodian area shows about 3 trillion-5 trillion cubic meters of gas and 400 million barrels of crude oil, said Te Duong Tara. There are 2,000 wells on the Thai side of the gulf and nearly 1,000 in Vietnam's portion.
         ChevronTexaco (NYSE:CVX), based in San Ramon, California, is the United States' second- largest integrated oil company. Its affiliates sell gasoline at about 24,000 stations worldwide. Kohsantepheap (2004-Apr-25) : Neuf branches de QorQi (arbre dont le bois sert à construire des pirogues) ont émergé du sol depuis la fin du mois de mars, causant un grand émoi chez la population des districts de Chantrea et de Kampong Ro dans la province de Svay Rieng. D'autant plus qu'il existait une légende du QorQi Duoch, haut de 100 m (disait-on), du sommet duquel on pouvait voir Prey Qor (Saïgon)! De ces grands arbres il ne reste plus aujourd'hui que deux échantillons : une vieille et énorme souche qui porte des traces de coupe, et un QorQi Duoch vivant, de quelques centenaires, sur un monticule à la frontière vietnamienne, Tuol QorQi Duoch devenu un endroit historique et aussi un lieu de culte.

La légende disait qu'en 1710 le roi viet Ong Lov venait avec ses troupes couper ces QorQi Duoch. Ils réussissaient à en abattre un mais ne pouvaient rien contre le tronc d'un autre. Les Viets eurent alors dans un rêve une révélation qu'il fallait d'abord asperger le tronc récalcitrant du sang d'un chien à poil noir. Ce qui fut fait, mais dès qu'ils commençaient à couper, il y avait eu un orage, la foudre tombait et tuait tous les Viets présents et aussi arrachait une grosse branche de l'arbre, laquelle s'enfonçait et disparaissait dans le sol. Le récent phénomène (peut-être explicable scientifiquement) d'émergence du sol de branches de QorQi dans la province de Svay Rieng fait dire à la population que ce sont là les branches arrachées par .... la foudre de 1710. Notons que la pagode Wat Prey QorQi Duoch, dans la même contrée, fut construite en 1744.
