Samart's Khmer freshie girls & boys 2004
DECEMBER 22nd, 2003

Koh Santepheap : Three gorgeous girls and three handsome boys were selected as Freshie Girls and Boys 2004 Saturday last week in a Samart Telecom-sponsored beauty contest at Phnom Penh's Chaktomuk theatre. A 19-year-old stunning-look girl, Miss Thor Somaline, a student from Royal University of Drama, and an 18-year-old fine-looking boy, Roth Sophear Nisith, a student from private school, International University, beat more than two thousand candidates to crown the first places of the Freshie Girl and Boy 2004 contest Saturday, December 20. They modeled and socially worked together for more than two months in many different fields including a visit to Angkor Wat to show their talents and personalities to finish the top 20 in the semi-finals.

The first runner-up of Freshie Girl went to a 16-year-old beautiful girl, Miss So Vattanak Chenda, a student from Santhor Mok High school as a 17-year-old gorgeous young lady, Miss Ou Dalis, a student from Royal University of Fine Arts, got the second runner-up. Of the Freshie Boys, the first runner-up went to a 19-year-old boy, Lok Chandara, a student from Wat Kor High School and the second runner-up was given to a 19-year-old boy, Sun Phearun, a High School Graduate. The Freshie Girl and Boy winners each were paid 2.5 million Riels (about $625.00), a Gold Cup, a cell phone and a visa to visit Thailand. The first runners-up each received 1.5 million Riels (about $375.00), a Silver Cup, a cell phone and a visa to visit Thailand. The second runners-up each got one million Riels (about $250), a Bronze Cup, a cell phone and a visa to visit Thailand. Under the terms of the contest, the selected Freshie Girls and Boys have been evaluated on three specific criteria — face and body, personality and talent. This is the third time that Samart Telecom, Ltd., the main sponsor of this festive event — in association with Phnom Penh TV3, where the contest took place and telecast — celebrated the Freshie Girl and Boy contest, which gives opportunity for Cambodian teenagers to show their talent and courage.

Provincial march for women and children
DECEMBER 23rd, 2003

Koh Santepheap : Thousands of Cambodian people including monks, authority officials, NGO’s representatives, teachers, and students Tuesday last week joined a campaign to march against women and children trafficking in Svay Rieng province bordering Vietnam. A procession of about 2000 people, armed with banners and banderoles themed against all forms of human trafficking and sexual abuses on women and children, December 18, gathered at Ba Vet High School of Ba Vet Commune, Chantrea district. After the third Governor of Prey Veng province addressed the campaign, they marched down for Ba Vet International Market on the Cambodian-Vietnamese border before turning up to National Route 1 toward Ba Vet Central Market.

“Today we launch a human trafficking awareness campaign on women and children. I hope that the campaign will raise more attention and better care for children and women, and putting an end to human trafficking and sexual abuses,” said Peace Guardians Organization director, Buddhist monk, Ven. Nhem Kim Teng, who led the campaign in conjunction with eight other NGOs, including Terre des Hommes of Germany, CWCC, VCAO, CWAR, DCO, CWDA, IOM, HOMELAND. The campaign, funded by Td H Germany, Td H Holland, UNICEEF, LWS, Save Children Norway, WFP, Sokimex Station, Canada Bank and ABA Bank, also suggests the United Nations to lay down December 12 as the Anti-Human Trafficking Day aiming at more attention and better care for women and children, who are subject to the trafficking. Poverty has forced children and women to leave and work far away from their warm families and trusted parents. They face countless problems in their search of jobs, including being trapped by cheats and promises of a well-paid job, the monk said.
